WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO A HAMMAM?
When you arrive at the hammam, an attendant will guide you to a changing room where you will be given a robe, a locker, and instructions on how to undress. You may wear underwear or a bathing suit, or you may be provided with a pair of disposable underwear. After you've fully undressed, put on your robe and go meet your hammam attendant.
TAKE A BREAK & SOAP UP
The attendant will take your robe and lead you into a hot, humid chamber where you won't be able to see anything. Sit back and relax. The steam will open your pores and a few deep breaths will help you relax. In about 5 minutes, the attendant will return with a dish of thick black Moroccan soap. It looks like molasses or crude oil, but don't be afraid; it feels great on your skin. You'll have to stand up, sit down, and turn around as the attendant soaps up your legs, feet, back, and face. She could even reach your buttocks through the back of your underwear. Sit back and relax for 5 minutes after applying the soap.
HOT RINSE & ROUGH SCRUB
The attendant will return with a full wooden bucket or plastic pail of water. She/he'll scoop out the water and use it to wash away your soap. Despite the fact that the water is so hot, I've never been burned. When all of the soap has been removed, the torture begins. The attendant will use a hard sandpapery hammam glove to scrape away the outer layer of dead skin.
